3 Lessons from a Dragon

Dragon’s Den, Arlene Dickinson spoke on “Leadership and Believing in Yourself” at the Human Resource Progressional Association’s Executive night?March 20, 2014.

Arlene shared ?her life story of coming to Canada from South Africa as a child with her family and ?only having? $50, dreaming of being a mother, being a mother of 4 children, finding herself in an abusive relationship, being a single mother with no money or skills to support her four children, then struggling to support her children.?Throughout her life story, Arelene skillfully weaved in lessons.

The three lessons, I learned from a Dragon are:

1. Talk to people. Don’t loose the human connection!?

Share your stories; people want to know who you are and how you got there.

Be honest and tell your people what they are doing is meaningful, remind them of their purpose and how they are making a difference. ?

Support other’s where possible.

2. Stay grounded. Be grateful for all you have and remember what is truly important. ?

3. Embrace the messiness: When you have a challenging day, ask yourself, what motivates me? Hold onto it and it will get you through the challenging times. “Life is messy; embrace the messiness.”
